City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Program received another $1 million donation from Newell Rubbermaid, the company whose brands include Sharpie, Paper Mate, Expo and Prismacolor. A portion of sales from its Pink Ribbon promotional products goes to support City of Hope research. The partnership, established in 2006, has generated donations of more than $2.4 million to date.

Monrovia, the leading grower of premium plants, was represented by its president, Elin Dowd, in a delegation of horticulture experts who visited Northeast China to help Dalian and other Chinese cities expand the use of plants and flowers in the landscape and among China's rapidly growing middle class. In America, 90 percent of flowers and plants are bought by consumers, with the remainder going to landscapers. In China, it's just the opposite, but the government wants to change that by promoting "leisure horticulture."

The company had applied for and received LEED certification; but, at the time of the June opening, wasn't sure what level. It recently learned it was the coveted LEED Gold certification for its 336,000-square-foot facility. Energy calculations on the new plant show a 50 percent reduction over its two existing operations.

The 19th annual Hawaiki Nui Va'a outrigger canoe race concluded in Tahiti on Nov. 12, 2010. The three-day, four-island event began in Huahine and finished in Bora Bora, covering a total of 77 miles.
