The Phelps Group Recognized For Eco Initiatives
SANTA MONICA, Calif. - (December 6, 2007) - The Phelps Group, one of the nation's leading integrated marketing communications agencies, was recently recognized by the city of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce for overall excellence in its eco initiatives during 2007.
The company received a Sustainable Quality Award and was commended as one of the city's "Solar Champions" by Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom at an event held in Santa Monica. The award was based on an extensive analysis of the company's eco initiatives during 2007, including:
- Investing in a major solar panel installation
- Implementing a company-wide lighting retrofit
- Charitable contributions and pro bono services to organizations such as Junior Blind of America, Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, and Santa Monica Historical Society.
"The solar panel installation is one part of our ongoing efforts to contribute to a healthy environment," said The Phelps Group CEO Joe Phelps. "From cutting down on wasteful paper use, to recycling and eliminating the use of chemical detergents, we believe every little bit helps. And it's encouraging to see the steps we have taken translated into real benefits, like significant reduction in CO2 levels and oil dependency. Thanks to the city of Santa Monica for its support and worldwide leadership in this area."
City officials have recognized the company's 50kW solar panel installation as the largest commercial system in Santa Monica. A photovoltaic system assessment by solar installer California Green Designs projected significant energy savings and contributions to the environment over a 25-year period, including:
- A reduction of 378,348 pounds of CO2
- Saving 50 acres of planted trees
- Reducing 7,572 barrels of oil
- 6,576 pounds of coal not burned
A 30-year projected utility bill savings averaging more than $31,000 per year was included in the analysis by California Green Designs. In addition, company-wide lighting retrofit initiatives saved approximately $8,000 during 2007, equaling 93,000 fewer pounds of carbon emissions.
